10 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Wedding DJ

“A great DJ makes your reception; the wrong one can stall it. Ask these 10 questions before you sign anything.”

The 10 questions that separate a great wedding DJ from a risky one — covering pricing, MC skills, backup gear, uplighting, and photo booth coordination.

Your wedding DJ controls the energy of the single most important party of your life — yet many couples book on price and a good phone call alone. These ten questions will tell you, quickly, whether a San Diego wedding DJ is a professional you can trust or a gamble you cannot afford.

1. Can I see an itemized, written quote? A number that looks competitive can balloon once you add ceremony sound, cocktail hour, uplighting, a photo booth, or overtime. Insist on a written breakdown of every cost so there are no surprises later.

2. Exactly how many hours are included, and what is your overtime rate? Overtime typically runs $150 to $300 per hour in San Diego. Knowing the exact figure up front prevents an awkward mid-reception conversation when the dance floor is still full.

3. Will you also be my MC — and how much experience do you have? The DJ who reads announcements, manages your timeline, and reads the room is the one who keeps your reception flowing. Ask how many weddings they have MC'd, not just DJ'd.

4. What backup equipment do you bring? A true professional carries redundant gear — a second controller, spare speakers, backup mics — so a single failure never stops your party. "I've never had a problem" is not the same as "I bring a full backup rig."

5. How is uplighting priced, and how many units does my venue need? Look for per-fixture pricing and a recommended count for your space. A vague flat "uplighting package" with no unit count usually means under-lit corners on the night.

6. Do you provide the photo booth in-house or subcontract it? Many DJs offer photo booths as an add-on run by a separate operator. Confirm who manages it and whether that person is briefed on your timeline, so it is an asset and not a bottleneck.

7. How do you handle song requests, must-plays, and do-not-plays? A great DJ blends your priorities with crowd energy. Make sure they honor your do-not-play list and do not simply take every request from the dance floor.

8. Have you worked at my venue before? A DJ familiar with your San Diego venue already knows the load-in, power, sound restrictions, and layout — one less variable on your wedding day.

9. Do you carry liability insurance and a written contract? Many venues require proof of insurance, and a clear contract protects you both. If a DJ hesitates on either, keep looking.

10. What happens if you get sick? Established companies have a network to send a qualified replacement. A solo DJ with no backup plan is a single point of failure for your entire reception.

At Concepts 2 Reality, we answer every one of these in writing before you book — itemized pricing, backup equipment, venue experience, insurance, and a real timeline. Book a free consultation and ask us anything.
